I noticed that many people post questions both in my support forums and news groups having Windows 7 has trouble getting Bootsect.exe to do their bidding. Bootsect.exe is a command line utility included in Windows 7 DVD to repair the intention not to install a bootable Windows 7 - except that it always seems to work.

The problem that most people seem to have made it back to single simple: do not modify the MBR Bootsect.exe: only fixed / repair the boot sector of the partition of Windows 7.The MBR is a "global bootsector" that tells the BIOS, hard disk where you must find a boot loader. The boot sector, by contrast, is like a MBR-dependent - each operating systemmay have its own bootsector to tell your system how to boot the system.

The source of all this confusion is that during the program Longhorn / Vista beta, a number of formations includes a version of Bootsect.exe (originally called `fixntfs.exe`) that modified both the MBR and boot sector.

However, in Windows Vista RTM build and Longhorn Server builds following Bootsect.exe is a utility command line to repair the boot sector and boot sector alone - it will not make your MBR to use the Vista BCD / bootmgr. To do that, you have to boot from the Vista DVD| Repair Options | Command Prompt.

Bootrec.exe / fixmbr
Bootrec.exe / fixboot
Bootrec.exe / RebuildBcd
Bootrec.exe is an "all-in-one" boot repair tools can only be accessed and run from the recovery console for 7. The first command rebuilds the MBR to use the win 7 boot loader. The second does the same thing Bootsect.exe and tells the bootsector where to find the BCD bootloader (bootmgr ). The final command rebuilds the BCD data from scratch and is very useful when recovering a borked win 7 partition.
