how to update netgear firmware?

I have a verizon DSL internet connection at my home. The router they provided was not a wireless so I bought a new one and installed it at my home. It worked fine and then the speed started dropping. So the netgear people told me to upgrade the firmware. I tried doing it but I din't really know what to do. So please some one explain to me step by step how to update netgear firmware?

I have got a DG834v2. I use mainly Debian Squeeze. I had no problem with .39, but tried to upgrade to .42 then failed. Upgrading did not finish, and the router's power LED and test LED started and kept flashing green and orange. I tried to reset with the button in the tiny hole on the back of the router, but the button did not work. I could not access the router at all. So I had to use the recovery tool from Netgear with my XP. I could upgrade with the tool to .42. Then Windows Messenger on my third machine Vista was kept getting disconnected. I did not know if it was caused by .42, but I have upgraded to .48, anyway. No problem upgrading this time. It has been only a few days since upgraded to .48, but it seems stable and faster. I hope this post helps someone who has similar problems
