How can I update my GPS via internet?

I am a new Tom Tom GPS user. I need to learn how to update my Tom Tom via Internet, if possible. I connected the GPS USB cable to my hard drive resulting in it bringing up photos to be transferred? I am confused as to how it is possible to update my GPS. On my last use of it, the system/voice was telling me to make right and left turns in the middle of the Baltimore I-95 Tunnel? It did not even get better after recharging overnight. I was unable to use it on my return trip. How can I update my GPS via internet? Please advice. Thanks.

First of all you need to check the compatibility of your device as some devices like Navigator 7 and pre installed maps on SD are not supported. However most of the TomTom devices are supported. Now after checking the compatibility follow the below procedure:

Go to the official website of the TomTom GPS and click on link, " Get started with Map Update Service" and after that choose your device type when prompted. After that you will be guided to TomTom HOME and there you will see a pop up window showing a personalised offer. If the message displayed is that you already have the latest maps in your device then you don't need to proceed further. However if the maps are available then the updation will start. When the map is fully updated then navigation becomes quick and accurate.

Roads change by a significant percentage every year so having the updated maps will ensure the accurate location information. Also the newer the maps are the lesser is the price for updating them. Whenever the newer maps are available in future you will get notified through email.
