How to use unix live cd?

I have a windows based computer and I would like to switch to Linux/Unix. I was thinking of installing a regular fedora on my computer but then my friend told me about the Unix live CD. He told me that for that we need a CD to be in the CD drive all the time. He also told me its various advantages. So I want to get one. Where can I get a unix live cd? Also tell me how to use it?

There are hundreds of LiveCD distributions in the world, so finding the perfect distribution could take a hell lot of trial and error! Fortunately, the live CD list has been categorized the distributions by their primary functions to help focus the decision making process.

One of the most popular and best supported distributions to your PC is called knoppix. Knoppix is a Linux-based LiveCD that includes Open Office, Konquerer, Apache, MySQL, and many other general purpose applications and utilization's. Many of the Live CD distributions in the present day world maximize their effect by making Knoppix as a starting point for their application collections.

It is also known that once the ISO file has been recorded to a CD-ROM and is ready to use! As long as a computer's BIOS allows it to boot from a CD, the Live CD can be started by just rebooting the system. In case If your computer won't boot from a CD, then you have to check the BIOS settings or your computer manufacturer's documentation for further additional information.

Once a LiveCD distribution is burned, thousands of applications and utilities are available simply by rebooting the computer. On many computers, people were able to reboot, launch a web browser, start a packet capture utility, and launch graphical network monitoring tool. This screen shot shows most of the results in just a few minutes of work!
