What are the different types of Windows XP license keys?

While searching on the internet for my windows xp license keys, I came across many types of keys that confused me completely. There are OEM, upgrade, branded and action pack kind of keys but I do not know which kind of license key I should get for my Win XP? So, guys please tell me about the significance of different keys and the best one for me?

There are many types of Windows XP CDs available in the market. Not all CDs and licenses are considered same. The different types of Windows XP CDs which are available in the market are:

1) OEM: This is usually sold with the computer.

2) Retail: You can get this in standalone stores like BestBuy and CompUSA.

3) Upgrade: This is required to upgrade from an earlier system.

4) Branded: Large manufacturers like Dell sell these branded copies.

5) Action Pack: This was part of the Microsoft Action Park.

6) Volume Licenses: This is used in government and large businesses.

The license key of one version will not work with another. First you need to determine which license key you are using. For this look up on the license sticker on the computer case. If it says "Only for Distribution", then it is an OEM copy. If "Upgrade" is written there, then it is Retail. It is very hard to tell whether the license key is from Action Pack or Volume Licenses. In case the License sticker is missing, then it is probably a retail copy. Branded CDs like Dell and HP are definitely OEM copies. It is impossible to suggest the License key for you as you need to check it yourself on the Windows XP CD.
