Do you know about the types of network operating systems?

Although not as widely known or used as it used to be, HP OpenVMS (originally form Dec) qualifies as a network operating system in my opinion. Open-VMS allows the formation of rather tightly integrated VMSclusters, which are networked OpenVMS systems with shared storage and shared print and batch.

VMSclusters can cover many miles and may include OpenVMS systems from Dec VAX old desktop or server through the desktop HP Alpha, the current HP Integrity Superdome 64-processor supercomputers.

Fundamental group is distributed OpenVMS Lock Manager, which allows multiple processes on multiple systems to synchronize access to shared resources. The lock manager also allows applications written especially for "hot" backups on other systems.This enables applications based on databases, eg Oracle, failover to a backup serverremotely much faster than on Windows, Linux, etc.
