How many types of linux operating systems are there?

If I am not wrong I think there are many types of linux operating systems. Am I right, are there different types of linux OS's in the market? How many types of linux operating systems are there? What are the major differences among them all? What makes them stand apart from the other? According to you which one is the best one among them all?

Linux is PC-UNIX and the kernel was created for PC/AT compatibles by Linus Torvalds of Finland. Linux got its name from kernel’s creator.

The combination of the kernel and some application software supporting it for use as a OS is called a “distribution”.

The biggest difference is how it got packaged and its different distributions are as follows:

  1. RedHat Linux
  2. CentOS
  3. Fedora
  4. Ubuntu

Comparisons between different distros:

1. In enterprise level supportively to Red Hat is more. It has less software compatibility issues and automatically can able to check new operating system, new web browser, a new email client and a new photo editor for their Linux.

2. In CentOS, multiple operating systems to run on a single server at the same time. Security is very high here.

3. Fedora is very easy to install and got the latest releases of most of all available software.

4. Overall the best is Ubuntu, as it has more like a GUI and all windows user will ready agree to go for Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a computer operating system based on the Debian Linux distribution. And also it is having wide range of software that installed as it is as Open Office, Firefox, Pidgin, Transmission etc., its main highlight is it can support for 46 languages.
