Has anyone of you told me the reason why apple personal computers are virus free?

Yesterday, my roommates and I were discussing about the formation of Apple personal computers efficiency and software. One of my roommates claimed that apple PC are prone to virus. When, I asked him the reason, he had no answer for this. I want to know how far it this true as compared to Windows PCs?

IIt will be more correct to say that comparatively Apple computers have less chance of getting affected with virus, but one can not claim that Mac PCs are totally safe from virus, malware and worm attacks. Though it is possible that a Mac could be affected by virus, the likelihood of this is very less. It is true that most users of Mac PCs do not use antivirus software unlike Windows users. It is true that Windows systems have faced as many as 140000 viruses, while Apple users have not been accustomed to none!

Mac computers run on operating systems (like Mac OS X) which are built on old and secure platforms like UNIX kernel which is oldest and most secure operating system. The second most important reason is that very few people use Apple computers compared to Microsoft Windows. This fact has made the developers of virus target Microsoft Windows PCs for virus attack as this affect many more people than Apple users. It means that there are fewer incentives for the creators of virus and other malicious code to attack Ma computers rather than Microsoft Windows based computers.

Most writers of virus and other malicious code are familiar with Windows and IBM architecture which is another reason for Mac PCs spared of such virus creators. Still, Mac users can be victims of Trojan horses and Phishing.
