Which is the best small Linux distro?

I am going to be traveling for a couple of weeks; and along with my laptop, I keep a Small Linux distro (CD) and my data backed up to an usb drive in case of hardware failure. Like to think I am prepared and not paranoid. I have used Tiny Core Linux and Puppy Linux for data rescue and an emergency work station. What is your experience with Small Linux distro? What would you recommend? Please help.

We have to admit that despite Ubiquity, Ubuntu just managed to stay in first place as the best distro for beginners. This is because the latest version feels strange to anyone who comes from a Windows environment, Gnome 2 and KDE, but Mac users might feel more at home than most.

This is because the Ubuntu team to replace the old desk with something they call Unity - an astute and accelerated full-screen interface that lets you quickly switch between applications and find your files. Only this first version has some stability problems, and if your graphics hardware is not up to par, the retreat to the old desktop creates unnecessary confusion.

But there are two reasons why Ubuntu is still a great choice for beginners: hardware compatibility and ease of installation. Put the disk in the drive, answer some easy questions and you'll find on the desktop in less than a jiffy.

And as long as it works, the Ubuntu developers still know how to make a desktop look good. Unity is a new way to use the desktop, but it is a brave move to try to do something different, either drag and drop files to the applications or how applications can be installed from the panel global search.

The result is overwhelming: 10,500 votes are (now) and now7040 have gone to Ubuntu / Debian / Linux Mint, a "cocktail" thatshares the same principles, but it seems to me that should beplaced separately. Fedora is the second choice, although almost10 times less than the number of votes, while the fight for third place is between Gentoo, openSUSE and Arch Linux amazing, highly valued by.
