A slimmer Sony PlayStation3 is set for late November launch

Sony has just announced the launch of a much slimmer new PlayStation 3 which the company claims is up to 50 percent smaller than the original PlayStation console. The company claims that the console’s new dimensions were possible due to a complete redesign of its insides. Sony says that the new console is up to 25 percent slimmer than the model currently available in the market. The new PS3 will be available in the market starting this holiday season though Sony claims that prices will vary from country to country.

The new console is also 1.1lbs lighter than the current model and comes with a ridged top panel and glossed edges though the overall aesthetic appeal of the redesigned console remains minimalist. The downsized console will be offered in three variants- a Europe- and Hong Kong-only model that would come with 12GB of flash memory, a 250GB HDD model and a 500GB HDD model.

A vertical stand will be sold separately to allow users to set the new PlayStation3 up in a vertical position. The new PlayStation 3 is expected to be bundled with special editions of top selling PS3 titles and would be available in two colors including a classic white and a charcoal black. The classic white PS3 will be launched in Japan in late November though Sony has not yet revealed the pricing and release details for the model in other parts of the world.
