Firstly in your case , I think you are using an unsupported itunes version. SharePod wasn't updated for almost a year and at it's current state only supports iTunes 10.2 or earlier. Later versions of iTunes come with an updated device driver which prevents tools [not designed for that version] to access the iOS device.
