Sharp has released a new CCD (Charge-Coupled device) image sensor, "RJ23G3BA0LT" that has highest pixel count in its category. The 1/2.3-inch is capable of providing a pixel count of 20.2 million to compact digital cameras. It is based on interline transfer method to capture the light. Sharp has been able to reduce the size of each pixel cell by 20% than its predecessor, "RJ23E3BA0LT". This one has each pixel cell sized at 1.20 x 1.20μm.

Sharp used its custom light collection technique for this sensor that has helped it to increase the amount of light it can take in, even after reducing the size of each pixel cell, while it remains sensitive to a charge of 105mV. The sensor will be able to churn out 720p high-definition videos with 30fps frame rate. It will start to ship the samples from this month, while the volume shipment will start from August. The price of each sensor hovers around US$33.6.
