How can I set my GPS receiver to my current location Cedar Rapids, Iowa?

I have just purchased a Nextar GPS receiver. When I turned the receiver on its current location shows California. I am currently in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Should it not show the current location? How do you set it to your current location? One of my friends told me to do some kind of initial fix with satellite. I don’t know what he was talking about. Can you enlighten me regarding this? How can I set my GPS receiver to my current location Cedar Rapids, Iowa? Please advice. Thanks.

To set your gps receiver you have to follow some guidelines and these instruction are that when you start Google Maps application, your approximate location is shown using information from nearby cellular towers in a circle. Your location is automatically updated with a more precise position when the GPS receiver finds your approximate location. Moreover to find your current location with Google Maps firstly select menu option then entertainment then location services then google maps. If your current location does not show up automatically then press the zero key on your device pad. Thank You.
