How to secure wireless internet connection?

My uncle is giving me a wireless router, so that I can connect my laptop and desktop to the internet at the same time. The other day I was speaking with a salesperson who told me that practically anyone within a certain range could access my internet connection for free. It seems to be very wrong because if I'm paying for something; it wouldn't seem right someone else being able to use it without my permission. So my question is how can I secure my network so no outside parties can access it and use my connection?

I am a network engineer and I will love to help you on this. There are lots of method through which you can secure your wireless network.First of all change the network setting of your wireless network by puttingsome password on your wireless network. So that on connection of any new useryour wireless network ask for the password. By the password only authorizeduser who know the exact password can use your wireless network. Second thingyou must do is install a original version of antivirus for the monitoring ofyour computer so that it can provide security to your system or it can preventfrom the hacker. You can download a Demo version of any antivirus for yourcomputer so that you can know that which one is better for your computer orwhich one provide the more security. You can install the Demo version of theantivirus like the Norton, Kaspresky, Panda, Avira. Hope these all informationcomes good for you.
