For a year or so, Research In Motion (RIM) has been making all possible efforts to bring a high-end BlackBerry 10-based smartphone (no, Superphone) into existence. Unconfirmed reports and images forecast the arrival of a handset, called the BlackBerry London, in Q3, this year. If we can trust the grapevines, it will be the first exclusive BlackBerry 10 handset from the Waterloo-based firm. RIM is about to surface its next major QNX-based operating system BlackBerry 10 or BBX in coming three months.

There have been rumors over the arrival of BBX and BBX-based handsets for a year. Some time ago, rumormongers predicted that RIM would launch its next major OS update in fall 2011. Adding fuel to the rumors, the Verge posted a leaked image of what should be the first ‘Superphone’ from RIM on BlackBerry 10. As of now, tech blogs assume that the BlackBerry London will hit stores later this year.
Going by the leaked specs, the London is supposed to come with a touchscreen and slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. Under the hood, the handset will have both TI OMAP5 and Qualcomm chipsets with 1.5GHz dual processors, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The device will further have an 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front camera for video chatting. It is certain that the London will be competitive in performance department. Furthermore, thanks to BBX, it will have a nice interface with many more native apps and features.
The BlackBerry London, as it name suggests, will be a BBX handset for the U.K, where BlackBerry still enjoys a better presence in market. As per some sources, RIM is also working with a pair of BBX-based phones, called the Laguna and Lisbon, for the U.S. customers. The models will be aimed at the carriers like Verizon, Sprint and AT&T. Indeed, RIM is looking for a return in the U.S market, where it’s share has shrunken due to the domination of Apple iPhone and Android handsets.
BlackBerry 10 is the next major update to RIM’s famous mobile operating system. It was originally named BBX, but RIM couldn’t go with the name as it was trademarked by BASIS International. Whatever it is, the renamed BlackBerry 10 is expected to come with lots of incredible features. With the new BB 10 and better quality products, RIM is working hard to retain its lost influence in the mobile industry.
In the meantime, in response to the reports about RIM’s upcoming BB 10 handset, stocks of the Canadian company, which has been reporting dismal quarterly earnings, could make some hopeful rally ahead in Toronto. The RIM shareholders are quite hopeful of the new developments. Of course, let us hope RIM could live up to its reputation as a leading smartphone maker with its new products.
