Which is the best pdf reader?

I am a music student and I am learning classical music at a college. A few days back my teacher gave me a few ebooks which are in pdf format. I never use e books so I don't have any sotware for pdf files on my computer. Also I am not an expert when it comes to computers. I want to know which is the best pdf reader around? I am looking for a free software cause I can't really pay for it. I hope there are some softwares for pdf files out there. Please give a download link and help on how do I open those files with it?

Since you are new to PDF format, here's a brief introduction to the format first. The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a popular format to publish formatted text and documents. There are several different versions of it, some qualifying as an Open Standard, some certified by ISO and some encumbered by software patents. Portable Document Format (PDF) is an open standard for document exchange. This file format created by Adobe Systems in 1993 is used for representing documents in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout flat document, including the text, fonts, graphics, and other information needed to display it.

Now there are a number of tools available for viewing PDF files on your computer and most of them are free to use. Though you didn't specify which operating system you are using, from your query it is pretty obvious that you are using a version of Windows. Here's a few PDF readers available free of cost for Windows,

Name Description
Adobe Reader Adobe's PDF reader
DigiSigner PDF viewer with added function to digitally sign PDF documents
Evince Universal viewer for GNOME.
Foxit Reader PDF viewer, text conversion limited to easily extracted postscript text, does no optical character recognition
Google Chrome View, search PDF files
GSview Legacy, a graphical interface for Ghostscript
Okular Universal viewer for KDE; replaces KPDF, available on versions of KDE from 4.1
Xpdf Legacy, a multi-platform viewer; based on Xpdf codebase
Sumatra PDF A open source PDF reader. Supports automatic reloading of PDF files.

Among these software, I really recommend Sumatra PDF because it's very small, open source and can also read DjVu files.
