In Mac OS X, as in any other operating system, there are a range of source code editors for all users, from which you just want to try some basic programming that aims to create an entire application or a professional website.

Setting aside large as Xcode development suite and other applications for Mac OS X, or Dreamweaver to create web pages, code editors have pure and hard, where we have to compile using external tools but are most easy to use and consume system resources so absurd. Let's look at what opportunities we have on the Apple platform after the jump.

Textmate, the king in features and high price.

It was impossible not to mention Textmate, the editor which has enchanted thousands of developers of the platform. Their motives have: their performance is good and the possibilities that are making huge fall short. I myself used to write articles like this using Textile, and some people until they use it as a task manager because of certain supplements.

In addition, the user community has contributed greatly to creating plenty of accessories to make the application capable of virtually anything. Their quality is such that there is even talk that is not only the best text and code editor for Mac OS X, but also on any platform surpassing the versatility and quality of the editors of Linux and Windows. There's even a book to learn all their secrets.

Anyway, Textmate has two problems. First: its price. 44.85 euros make users scratching their heads, doubt and start looking for alternatives. On the other side is also very slow its evolution, there is too little regular updates and new features are very subtle. In fact, Textmate has not undergone any major changes for years, and the promised second version also takes many months without signs.

Smultron and Fraise, two brothers faced

Might say that these two editors are the same, although there are some differences. Smultron was born as an editor that can be considered a free alternative to Textmate very customizable but not as versatile, but very similar, and assuming more than enough for most programmers. Unfortunately one day his time ceased to be responsible for further developing the program and left, until the other party created a fork of the application called Fraise.

He spent time in which Fraise followed like Smultron's successor, but with the birth of the Mac App Store original developer decided to get down to work again and raised Smultron in the App Store at a price of 3.99 euros. So we have raised one hand to Smultron as payment application (although the price is not bad) and on the other side Fraise still with the original aspirations of the former.
