Are there some best operating systems for servers at home?

I want to know about some best operating system for servers. I need some operating systems for servers at home that can handle data and file server, can be connected to Wi-Fi (WLAN) and internet to access the file. I would like to fetch streaming media (audio & video) to multiple computers at once; so I want something that can manage my home network with no gross security holes. I have no idea of Linux, but if someone suggests Linux, that's cool, I'm always willing to learn. Are there some best operating systems for servers at home? Please help me out.

Despite much debate about which OS is better to host a server usually revolve around Linux and Windows, which are just two of many systems ready to operate serversavailable. Some are free and open as Linux, while others are commercial and closed. Here is a brief list of some of the most popular alternatives.

FreeBSD - Based on the original BSD, a free alternative to Unix, FreeBSD is free and open source and is known for its stability and her pet demon.

OpenBSD - Another variant of BSD, OpenBSD is known for its concern for the securityconfiguration. The developers of the operating system is also responsible for OpenSSHand OpenSSL.

Solaris - Once the brain child of the now defunct Sun Microsystems, Solaris is acommercial variant of UNIX that uses many of the free software tools available for Linux and BSD. There is also a free version called OpenSolaris. All Solaris products are now owned by Oracle.

Mac OS X Server - Although commonly perceived as a desktop operating system, MacOS X is a Unix variant with all rules, and contains many of the features of BSD. Like thecommercial offers Unix, OS X Server is designed to run on Apple hardware, but there is a free and open source, Darwin, which technically would work with anything.

Other commercial Unix variants - Many of the big server companies including their ownproprietary operating systems already installed on UNIX servers. Some big names IBMAIX and HP, HP-UX.
