Around a month ago, Disney bought out George Lucas’ company Lucasfilm which officially added the beloved characters from the Star Wars universe to the Disney empire. Even though Disney has not announced any plans to create a movie where Han Solo and Luke Skywalker sign a ballad with Little Mermaid and Princess Leia romances Aladdin, the acquisition is bringing a huge shift in the way Star Wars goodies are merchandized. A good example of the Disney-ficaiton of Star Wars is the newly announced limited edition variants of the Nestle Gold Blend coffee machines that will be offered with Star Wars themes exteriors.
For folks who supported the dark side of the Force, there is a Darth Vader themes “Dark Set” which features the famed antagonist’s face along the side with supposedly clever “The Force is strong with this one” wordings printed on top. For supporters of the light side of the Force, there is a “Light Set” which is offered in a white and black colorway with a cheery C-3PO asking you to “Thank the maker”.
What prompted the famed coffee and coffee making accessories maker to produce such a monstrosity is still unknown though we can definitely see similarities between this astonishing product and all the other cutesy stuff with Disney characters printed on them that the company has been selling to kids and teens over the years.
Whether the more discerning and dedicated of the 35-year old Star Wars franchise will appreciate being treated to the same marketing tactics that is used for kids and preteens of course remains to be seen. Only 5,000 units of the special edition coffee machines will be produced though they will only be available in Japan at Yen 9800 (roughly $120) a pop.
