Microsoft to eliminate disc drives for Xbox 720, slated for 2013 launch

In a latest rumor allegdly reported by Microsoft to MVC - Microsoft will no longer be using disc drive systems in their upcoming Xbox 720, nicknamed Durango which is due for 2013 release. Xbox games and applications will integrate the use of interchangeable solid state cards for storage and will be made available only for downloading, although it is unknown whether this will be more standard format such as SD or a proprietary.

Microsoft has issued a fuller avowal to MCV, stating that

Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend its lifecycle like introducing the world to controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention. Beyond that we do not comment on rumors or speculation.
If the rumor is true, fixed with a ostensible disc-less PS4, the uniqueness to own cases and its manuals will be a vanishing reality. With the beginning of this new trend, the gaming retail shops, particularly UK’s GAME and Gamestop, will be forced to change their strategies or face an disquieting wakeup call due to speedily declining sales.
