Robot terminology is often misunderstood and misused. There has never been a clear definition of what is and is not a robot. As a robot can be anything from a remote control toy machine independent research. Learn the basics of robot terminology is invaluable for a career or hobby robotics.

  • Start learning the terminology robot mechanism by studying the principles of industrial robots. The history of modern robotics began during the Cold War as a cheaper way to produce goods.

  • Explore the development of robots of science fiction to today's research. Much of the history and terminology of robotics started with science fiction. A first study of human ideas of robots will help in understanding the terminology of robot.

  • Survey of current uses and capabilities of robots. The most common classifications of groups of robots today are "autonomous" and "operated by remote control." Autonomous robots are robots more complicated in terms of software, while remotely operated robots do not require special programming and are usually able to perform complex tasks more easily than independent models.

  • I understand that all remote robots need a few basic components: a human controller, an actuator that performs a function and a way for the operator to issue commands.

  • Check out a website as a library or good engineering RobotWorx (see Resources below) to learn about autonomous robots, or robots that operate without a human controller. These robots need much more complex programming as well as networks of sensors to help them interact with their environment.
