It requires a lot of power to stand out and be noticed in the crowded market of ultrabooks, but HP is betting that a heavy dose of Gorilla glass will complete the goal. The newly released HP Envy 14 Spectre is the most glass bathed ultrabook we have ever seen. Looking at its design, there is no need to say that Spectre was the most stylish and eye appealing device at CES 2012. It has a lovely high-resolution screen, but also a $1,399 price tag, which is $100 more than a 13-inch MacBook Air. Looking at its standard internal specifications, is it worth of that amount? Well, that is what we will decide in this post.
Envy 14 is a well-designed multimedia ultrabook with great performance. With fast processor, it has the capability to handle any task including games. You can open as many as tabs you want to, buffer videos and perform other tasks at the same time without any problem. It shares files with a blazing transfer rate while its display looks great and offers amazing video play back.
Talking about the booting time, it takes around 35 seconds to start that is 26 seconds faster than this category average. It wakes up from sleep within 1 or 2 seconds, which is remarkably fast than any other laptop.
The 14-inch ultrabook features a Core i5 chip with integrated graphics and 4GB 1,333MHz DDR3 RAM. It packs a 1600-by-900-pixel native-resolution LED, 128 GB 7200RPM hard drive and runs on Windows 7 Home Premium (64) bit. Envy 14 has a radiance backlit keyboard where the keys lit up when you are using them and goes dim if idle to save battery.
The keyboard has large enter, shift and tab keys while the space bar is slightly shortened. Row of F keys perform their multimedia functions by default, instead of Fn + F key combo. Its webcam captures videos and images in 720p using Cyber Link YouCam. Powered by an 8-cell Li-ion battery, it gives you a battery backup of six hours and 20 minutes, under normal usage.
HP Envy Spectre 14, the first big high design ultrabook of 2012 is a solid experiment by the company that succeeds largely. The engineers at HP spent a lot of time and effort in its design. However, the design will shine with you only if you are willing to pay a good premium for it. The weight can be a problem, but its gorgeous looks, great display and fantastic performance will simply overcome that. If you are thinking about its glass built, durability and future of your $1,400 investment, then we are leaving this to you. If you think you can handle its beauty and power at the same time, go for it.
