Is my GPS not working due to the power surge from lightning?

I have a 2010 GPS chart plotter that is approximately 8 years old. It has worked well up until turning it on today. The unit doesn't initiate and the screen just shows vertical black stripes when the power is turned on. We live in south Florida and there is always the possibility of a power surge from lightning although all my other electronics are fine. Is my GPS not working due to the power surge from lightning? What can I do to fix it? Please advice. Thank you for your assistance.

Recently it has been found out that many of the GPS chart plotter are mal functioning and the screens are showing black vertical stripes when the power it’s turned on. Sudden power surge are the main problems behind this situation. Here are some remedies which will lead to solution.

Solution

First of all, check whether your house is earthed or not. If not, then the first thing you should do is to earthen your house. This will give your house protection from lightning and sudden rise in voltage. Then try to retune your GPS machine and initiate the screen to glow.

If your GPS is still not working, have looks whether you have an UPS in your house or not. An UPS will deliver stability towards your voltage and also control the flow of voltage through it that finally drives your GPS.

If your problem is not fixed yet, then check whether the internal wirings of the GPS have been affected or not. Also have looks on the back side of the screen if any damages have occurred or not. If yes, mend it and again power the GPS on.

Hope your GPS will work fine after executing these remedies.
