Could you tell me about GPS tracking devices like SPOT and EPIRB?

Well, I have an interest to know about GPS tracking devices. I want to know these devices for vehicle purpose. Actually, I want to go for a trip from Arizona to Texas and thinking of getting a GPS/satellite tracker for emergencies especially the SPOT system as the coverage map. I have only heard about SPOT and EPIRB. Could you tell me about GPS tracking devices like SPOT and EPIRB? Please help me.

SPOT would allow you to update your family members and friends about the whereabouts of yourself with just a push of button. You will be able to connect to the international rescue coordination center with your GPS location ate times of emergency. It provides four major functions. The first one SOS/911 which can be opted for assistance in the case of life threatening or critical emergencies. In case of non-life threatening emergency the Help option can be opted to notify your personal contacts for assistance. This is the second option. Some additional features can be purchased which will enhance the functionality of the Help button. With this you will be able to professional land and water services. Third option being Check-in/OK which lets your friends and family members that everything is OK. Fourth option is the Track Progress which allows you to send and save your location and let your contacts know about your real time progress using Google Maps.

Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon, EPIRB is basically used to guide rescuers in locating a person in an emergency situation. These are mainly used by boaters. It has two radio transmitters and a GPS receiver. On activation both the transmitters starts sending signals which has a unique serial number and information about the exact location. This signal is received by the GPS receiver. The Coast Guards knows about the owner of the EPIRB through the serial number but for this it has to be registered with the authority. This is of immense help to the rescuers both in planes and boats.
