Why is my GPS for Europe not working properly?

After installing the Garmin Lifetime Updater and some maps for Central Europe, my Garmin 255 W doesn't work properly anymore. I have tried to install the latest maps when I received the notification on my PC. I switched PC and GPS off and on - with no result. It seems to have forgotten much of the British maps and I can't type in a post code only in order to go to a place? Why is my GPS for Europe not working properly? How can I fix it? Please advice. Thanks.

Ever since its introduction, the Garmin Lifetime Updater has been problematic. Despite several patches and newer issues, the software is just crappy and it poses us with loads of troubles.

In your case, I think that there must have been some problems with the downloading and extracting process. The whole lifetime updater is a hefty file coming around 2GB and naturally while downloading such a big file, you face some glitches. Since you are saying that the British maps don't work, I'm guessing that there must have been some problems while downloading the maps for that area.

Fixing it might be a tricky one. Try formatting your Garmin device and re installing the whole thing. Most of the times, it will not work and the device will give out some error messages. If it does not happen, consider yourself lucky.

Else, the easiest solution is to use the old, classic Map Update software. You can get that at Garmin website.

After clicking on Automotive, connect your device to the computer and then select the Option 2, Garmin Map Update App from the Device Content area. This will do the job in an easier, quicker and efficient way.
