Google to launch cloud storage service soon

To rival with the key cloud storage services like Dropbox and iCloud, Google reportedly plans a complete cloud storage service, supposedly named Google Drive. Google, despite being the premier firm to introduce cloud computing in the form of Docs, has not yet created a Dropbox-esque cloud service for file storage. If rumours are something to go by, the Mountain View will kick off the Drive in a few weeks.

The Drive will let the users store files like documents, images, audio and video clips in Google’s servers. It means members can retrieve their data from any web-connected devices in the world. Moreover, the contents can be shared with friends quite easily. The service will also be compatible with Android smartphones, thus you can install the Drive app to store, share and retrieve files on your smartphones and tablets.

Dropbox, a Silicon Valley start-up, which was established by two MIT graduates five years back, has been a huge success. It boasts more than 45 million users, who depend on the service to store and share files. Meanwhile, Apple’s iCloud has received huge attention as a better cloud storage option for iOS devices.

Google might be aiming to become a big player in cloud storage market in the same fashion it launched Google+ to compete with the likes of Facebook and Twitter. Of course, Google Drive can gain soil through its own Android mobile OS platform. Dropbox, which is currently the best option for Android users for cloud storage, will be challenged the most by the Drive.
