There are loads of ways by which you can protect your system from virus effect you just have to use an antivirus which is appropriate for your system . It is recommended to the computer user to use antivirus to stay safe. And again when it comes to internet user then chance increases that viruses can effect your system as there are many virus which directly comes from internet and web worlds. Changing operating system is not the solution.

Apart from this i would like to tell you that there are many web browsers which you can use but in case of using web browser like as you said Google chrome then you have to use Google chrome which is portable with Ubuntu or Linux based operating system so you have to look for Google chrome for Linux platform. To find Google chrome for Ubuntu you can directly download it form Google.com but there you have to choose any of these version like Fedora/Ubuntu/openSUSE because these will be portable with your system. Otherwise you can even ask to the software provider near to your area. You can even opt for Chromium which is a version of Google chrome and in most of the cases Linux based platform uses the same.
