Gizmo 5 is or rather, was a VoIP communications network that acted as a soft phone for that network. It was acquired by Google in March 2009 for a whopping 30 million dollars, but was soon withdrawn by Google in April 2011. Gizmo 5 was founded by SI Phone who had Mark Robertson as its founder. The Gizmo 5 nwtwork made use of open standards for call management, SIP, and XMPP.Tthe Gizmo 5 client application used various propriety codes such as GIPS and iSAC.

Gizmo was based on a protocol known as Session Initiation Protocol or SIP and can interoperate with PSTN or otrher SIP based networks. It had service features such as Call Out and Call In. It used encryption for network calls and was truly very popular. Gizmo 5 also had a smartphone version and supported codecs like GSM, PCMA, iSAC, iPCM and more. While providing free voice mail service, Gizmo 5 also supported outbound caller line identifiacation in the USofA.

In July 2009, I-P-Tel GmbH, a VoIP related products provider, accused Gizmo5 of violating the GPL concerning a SIP client for Android phones (Sipdroid). Soon, I-P-Tel GmbH blocked access to Gizmo5 via I-P-Tel GmbH's PBX.com service. To avoid any more controversies, Google terminated the services of Gizmo 5. But one must admit that the Gizmo 5 managed to gain immense popularity for as long as it remained.
