How can I fix my GPS to come out of search mode?

I have a Roadmate 1440. When it powers up, it seems like it is searching for a signal. I bought a cable and connected it to the computer and downloaded the latest version for it (the Magellan software thing says ‘your device is up to date’ and has version 22.2.2 or something to that effect. It seems to go in to a ‘search mode’ with a little clock like or radar sweep symbol on it My GPS is about a year old. Do I have to buy something for it every year? I thought it would work forever and I would only have to pay if I wanted updated maps. How can I fix my GPS to come out of search mode? Main menu is dead and does not navigate me anywhere, just goes in to search mode. Please help. Thanks.

First of all, let me clarify this to you that you dont have to buy a device every year. Once you have bought a new one, it is supposed to work for a good number of years as long as it does not get obsolete. Until then, having the maps and firmware updated would be enough to keep the device working.

From what i understand, your device just keeps on searching for something and the menu is dead, right ? It appears that your device is not able to catch any signal from the sattelite so it just keeps looking for it . Here are a few things that you can do to sort out the problem.

First: Check, if the sky is clear because that is one important criteria for good signal reception.

Second: Try rebooting the device by holding the power button for 10 seconds. This should fix the problem in most number of cases.

Third : Try restoring the settings to default by using the menu option and settings under it. This should fix the problem, if any changes in the settings are responsible for no signal reception.

Fourth: In case you feel that the problem started only after a recent update of software, then the easiest thing would be just to rollback to the previous software.

Fifth: If nothing works out, i think the last option is to contact the support guys. they would be able to find out the real problem and sort it out accordingly.
