Is FileVault full disk encryption secure?

I have an OS X Lion with me and its FileVault that offer full disk encryption in OS X Lion. Before this I was using TrueCrypt for security issues. But before I completely trust FileVault I need to know its security model as well as does it even compare to the security of its competitors? All of us like me who are not such big techno- bees we assume it to be a closed source, but is it fundamentally worse than its open source competitors? If yes than how can we be sure about it?

FileVault is the system which also encrypts files on a macintosh computer and It can be also found in the mac os x v 10.3 panther operating system and later.

FileVault uses only the encrypted file systems which are encrypted and even the decrypted on the fly. A master password and recovery key in 10.7+ is created as a precaution against a user losing their password. Althoughit is early versions were slow and even caused a system to be a temporarily hang when used with disk-intensive applications, such as sound and video editing, the performance of FileVault has been improved in more recent versions of macOS X.

In mac OS X v10.4 tiger and below, the FileVault stores the encrypted file system as a sparse disk image, which is said to basically a single large file. In mac OS X v10.5 leoperd, the FileVault stores only the encrypted file system as a new image called as a sparse bundle break images into smaller size 8MB files called bands, allowing them to be backed up. The well known FileVault 2, introduced in the mac OS X v10.7 lion, and even encrypts the entire disks rather than users' home folders. It also solves the compatibility problems related to the backup, as the encryption is to be transparent to the backup software while the operating system is runnin on.
