With a recent interview with Robbie Bach, in charge of the Xbox, Zune, and Windows Mobile, SFGate sat down to discuss many hot topic items. One item being, “Is there going to be a new Zune Phone?” The response from Robbie is bland and obvious,
We don’t make phones ourselves. We don’t have any plans to make phones ourselves.Although he says that, he later goes on to say,
A phone is a very personal thing. Different people want different types of phones. With that said, it tells us that there will be no new Zune Phone coming up. But what this statement doesn’t rule out is the possibility that Zune software could be used in making a next-gen phone with touch screen.
While being pressured more about it he goes onto saying,
Take the device independent for a second and just assume that over time where there’s a screen, touch will be part of it. It’s not going to matter what the product line is. You’re going to see it be a cornerstone of the work we do. So it’s a statement of inevitability, almost as if you were to ask, Are computers going to get faster?.
With that interview and the recent attempts by Microsoft to create anything touch screen, this is proving to be more and more real by the day. I think that this improvement to any phone is a fantastic idea. I would much rather be able to touch and move things on my phone than click and be limited on what I can do. Although this is fine and dandy for a phone, it is a terrible idea for a computer.
There are some pros and cons to the general idea of the touchscreen.
Pros
1) It is faster
2) It is cooler
3) User friendly
Cons
1) Scratches
2) Cleanliness of the screen is compromised
3) Costs more money
I just went through three pros and three cons that will most likely affect the most people. The pros are easy to understand. It will probably be faster because you don’t really have to move around the keyboard and memorize the keys, you just have to touch and go. It is obviously going to look cooler, well, until everyone gets one. It will also be user friendly. It won’t be hard to understand and all you have to do is touch and screen and you are off to the races.
The ons are a little bit more serious and could cost you money in the end. You could create scratches on the screen from repeated use and from dropping. They could create film covers or something that is transparent that goes over the top of the screen but then that will cost you money replacing it. Then there is the cleanliness of the screen. The screen is going to get constantly dirt if you are touching it with your fingers. Even with a touch tool it will still get dirt and probably have to replace the covering so it doesn’t hinder the use of the touch screen. But in the end it will come down to money. It will cost you money to replace the things I just mentioned and it will more than likely cost more to buy the phone.
With the pros and cons weighed, I wouldn’t buy the phone. I would just be sticking to my razor and have nothing to do with that new technology until it is perfected and the price lowered. That is pretty much the way with anything new. If you get it when it comes out, then there are going to be flaws that you are going to run across and frustration will occur. I’d think it better to just wait for a later release of a perfected phone rather than a brand new one.

Why would Microsoft make a touch screen Zune? They already said that they wanted to put the Zune software in future Windows Mobile OSs. There would be no need for a ”Zune phone” then.
Well I think they are more into the touch thing for navigation through the archives of music. However a phone kinda might be imminent, considering there is the iPhone. I mean come on, the Zune is the iPod’s competitor, so they gotta keep up with the game and bring out a phone. Lol. I really don’t care honestly, I’m fine with my blackberry and motorola.
Well that is an interesting point John. Take for instance EA and T2. In their case though EA is trying to just buyout their main competitor. I believe the Zune isn’t a threat anymore to the iPhone. They are in the clear even though the Zune is a cool phone.
