TMS device to give you a full night's sleep in just three hours

How many times have you said 'if I only had a few more hours..' or '8 hours a day is just not enough'? You would have conquered the world if you had more time, right? So, how do people find time to finish up their work? Cut back on sleep, of course.

People who cut back on their sleep end up stressed and this leads to various stress-related health problems like high-blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. On the other hand, there are people who have all the time in the world but still can't get enough sleep due to insomnia.

If people could do with only three hours of sleep, imagine the amount of progress the world could make in the rest of the time! Scientists from University of Wisconsin-Madison have a made a new discovery that could help you fall asleep like a baby in minutes with a push of button for three hours and still feel the same refreshment of eight hours of sleep.

The TMS device which is to be worn on the head uses a technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) which sends harmless magnetic signals through the scalp and skull and into the brain, where it activates electrical impulses. If this device was positioned in the correct manner, it could trigger slow waves that would travel through the brain that were similar to deep sleep or 'power nap' that is as beneficial as having 8 hours of sleep.

Creating slow waves on demand could some day lead to treatments for insomnia

says study leader Prof Giulio Tononi, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

This device could be a breakthrough to millions of people who are suffering from insomnia and have sleepless nights everyday.

On the contrary, it's hard to imagine people having three hours of blissful sleep, waking up and driving around in the midnight like zombies, restaurants open all night to cater to the hungry and Big boss calling up their employees in the midnight to discuss work!

Ooh! That's a scary thought!
