World's thinnest high-brightness LED-chip coming soon

Posted By: Madan Lal | Dec 20 2007

Seoul Semiconductor's new chip-LED, WH108, measures 1.6mm x 0.8mm x 0.17mm and with those dimensions it is 15% thinner than the industry's current chip-LEDs. It is world's thinnest, but contrary to it size, it performs at an incredible luminous intensity of 240 mcd at a current 5 mA, which is double the brightness provided by existing chip-LEDs.

It has got enhanced thermal characteristics to support working in demanding environments. Wafer-type substrate improves the optical efficiency with excellent luminous intensity and thermal characteristics.

Moreover, this will help reducing the size of routine items such as cell phone keypad modules or touch pads at the same brightness at a lower power, which directly hints at extended battery life. Prototype will be available in white, blue and green to cellphones in December 2007, and mass production will get a spark in the first quarter of 2008.
