World's fastest quantum computer being built
We might be at the brink of seeing the world's fastest quantum computer. Making use of the advantage that qubit has over normal bit, lasers were used to create a solid state qubit at rates of approximately one gigahertz. It employs what researchers call the "spin" that takes place within an electron. They have shown the ability of a single electron in a self-assembled quantum dot. Since an electron is trapped in a dark state, applied light or laser cannot destroy its coherence. In this dark state is the place where information can be stored. They could reduce the size of today's computers dramatically and also increase their performance. This advanced technology was achieved by two lasers. It would also help in security; as such information cannot be cracked by a conventional computer.
