World’s largest space camera begins hunt for killer asteroids

The world’s largest digital camera is finally all operational, it is up and ready to hunt down the asteroids and comets speeding towards the Earth with its rather impressive 1,400 megapixel sensor. The 16-inches wide mirror of the Pan-STARRS space camera installed in Hawaii runs on the Pan STARRS-1. The camera manages 500 pictures of the sky every night, automatically, and then sends the same to the Maui High Performance Computing Center for comparisons with earlier images. The monstrous 4 terabytes of data and the camera’s far-reaching ability, lets the observers determine which asteroids pose a potential collision threat to Earth.
