World’s largest CMOS image sensor from Canon measures 202 x 205mm

Canon, the worldwide leader in high-end and entry level cameras alike, has unveiled the world’s largest CMOS image sensor measuring 202 x 205mm. Almost 40 times the size of the Canon’s present largest CMOS sensor, this CMOS sensor is produced using 12-inch, 30mm silicon wafer. The large size of the sensor offers it more light gathering capability, which lets the sensor capture images in one one-hundredth the amount of light taken up by a SLR, thus making it fit for best performance in very low light. Besides this, Canon has also improved the sensor’s circuit design, which enables it a video-compatible CMOS sensor that records videos at 60fps with 0.3 lux of illumination.
