What does Greg Kolodziejzyk, I’ve given up pronouncing that one, do after breaking the world record for the fastest pedal boating? He plans to conquer the mighty Atlantic ocean, in a human powered kayak. Yes, you heard it right, Greg and a companion sailor are planning to cross the Atlantic in a contraption conjured entirely by Greg. This pedal powered kayak, called the WiTHiN, is currently being extensively tested off the Canadian coast. This, brings us to the very vital question, what does this human powered kayak have apart from Greg and his mate’s amazing will power, courage and skill to make it across the ocean that sank the Titanic. The 23 foot WiTHiN is pedal powered with space for two and for a whole load of supplies for the estimated 40 day odyssey. Breaking away from convention, the WiTHiN has the propellor in the middle with the rudder at the rear. The design also has solid flotation in the front and rear to keep the kayak steady. At 150 watts of input power, 80 rpm, WiTHiN’s speed is about 8 to 9 kph.
To get the WiTHiN going, one sailor pedals and the other sailor sleeps or rests in the water tight resting cabin to balance the craft. The WiTHiN also has ballast, strategically placed to let the sailors cope with the rough Atlantic’s varying moods. The WiTHiN’s design also ensures that it manages to reach decent speeds in fair weather conditions. No idea if they are offering to the masses, but this thing is certainly the one every adventure sports lover would love to own.
