Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has announced the ‘Winglet’, a personal transport assistance robot. It helps people to enjoy a safety and mobility and consists of an electric motor, two wheels and internal sensors and also helps the rider to balance. The winglet weighs 9.9 to 12.3kgs and the robot assistant is ridden in a standing position. The internal sensors constantly monitor the rider’s position and make sure he or she remains stable and safe. The battery needs to be charged for just an hour and it can reach a top speed of 6kmph. The vehicle has a unique parallel mechanism, which helps it go backwards, forwards and turn either ways just by shifting the body weight. The highlight of the vehicle is that it can be used in cramped and crowded environments such as airports, beaches and universities. The TMC has created 3 models, ‘L’, ‘M’, and ‘S’ each of which differ in handling features. These may be tried in shopping complexes, Airports, resorts and other such places in the future.
