Which is better: Blu-ray or HD DVD?

We all know that the next-generation disc format war has started, but are oblivious of the fact that where its is actually heading. Of course, now we have wider options and better technology but ironically, the same is fueled by the rivalry instigated by the advocates of Blu-ray on one front and HD-DVD on the other.

Melissa J. Perenson of PC World blows off the dust settled by the stamping warriors, and tries to highlight both the polished and rough edges of the Blu-ray and the HD-DVD. According to Melissa, HD-DVD is currently having an upper edge as it was launched earlier and there are plenty of titles available too.

On technological front, both the formats are here to deliver the best and, in fact, the image quality of both is superb. Things will further clear only when both the formats will come out with same titles later. As far as capacity is concerned, the Blu-ray has a greater maximum capacity of 50GB for dual-layer discs, whereas HD DVD features only 30GB for a dual-layer disc. As there are more Blu-ray burners available in the market, the Blu-ray topples HD-DVD in recording.

Now, talking of price, HD DVD emerges as a winner with RCA's and Toshiba's players available at $499, whereas Samsung's BD-P1000, which is the cheapest Blu-ray disc player, costs a whopping $1000.
