What we need to know about the Verizon iPhone

The long-awaited Verizon iPhone will soon be available. The company officially declared the iPhone plan in 2008 but it remained in testing for a year. It must be noted that the Verizon iPhone will be a 3G (EV-DO) only with no GSM roaming. The new iPhone news has enraged a dust storm which will take sometime to settle down. But among all the excitement the basics shall not be left out.

The iPhone will be based on CDMA technology and AT&T’s version will run over its GSM network. Everybody knows that CDMA has its own advantages and limitations. One limitation of the phone is that unlike GSM it won't support simultaneous voice and data - however, the company is promising an upgraded CDMA network that would allow simultaneous voice and data. The iPhone will feature a five user Wi-Fi hotspot functionality.

Pricing and availability

The existing customers can place a pre-order on February 3 and by February 10 the iPhone will hit the Verizon and Apple Stores. $199 is the price for a 16GB phone and $299 is the price for a 32 GB phone.

What’s great?

The Verizon iPhone 4 will be a 3G device through which unlimited data can be accessed for $30 per month. Initially AT&T offered an unlimited data plan — but offered a 200MB tier for $15 and 2GB plan for $25.

What’s not so great?

Verizon's CDMA network doesn't support simultaneous voice and data as with the GSM version. The iPhone also does not have new antenna design which we were hearing about last week. In fact, the iPhone will be a Verizon 3G (EV-DO) only with no 4G data or GSM roaming.

Verdict

The iPhone will be a all inclusive with some amazing specs. It will place a tough challenge before its competitors to upgrade themselves. Technological needs give scope to better type of applications and features. For a normal user the smartphone is worth being considered but the corporate users would have to think over it before buying.
