Martin Allen, a computer engineer at the Canterbury University in collaboration with Niwa, Otago University and Auckland University has developed the UV Dosimeter, a wrist-worn device which can measure the body’s exposure to ultraviolet radiations. The small battery-powered device can also be hooked to various other parts of the body to know the UV exposure, which could decrease the wearer’s chance of exposure to skin cancer. The UV Dosimeter cannot be considered a shield against exposure to the sun, it is a mere indicator of the amount of radiation your body is being affected with, which the user can decrease with sunscreens and long sleeves, caps etc. Because skin cancer is a growing concern in New Zwaland, Martin and other scientists are planning to develop a program to get the device to schools to help children learn about UV radiation.
