Wall climbing bot is the next gen of wall-painters
When I first saw this wall climbing robot in action, my first reaction was 'Oh good, maybe they can train it to paint walls for us!' And as it turns out I wasn’t entirely disappointed with the list of purposes listed next to the thing’s description either. Created by researchers of the non-profit group SRI International, the as yet unnamed bot uses the same principles of electro adhesion as the ones utilized in the age-old fun party game of get-drunk-rub-up-a-balloon-and-stick-it-to-the-wall! The bot generates electrostatic charges to cling to the wall substrate to keep itself from falling even if the wall in question is a heavily dust-covered part of your own basement! The demo ready invention is all set to make a grand debut at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Pasadena, California and researchers hope that their clever Spidey-bot will someday be used in surveillance, cleaning and a plethora of work related to vertical spaces.
