The world’s largest retailer will now be selling receivers for the technology known as HD Radio.
The company will carry a HD in-dash car radio from JVC in 1,989 of its stores in 85 markets that will be priced at about $190.
HD Radio boasts of CD-quality sound and also requires a digital tuner.
According to Wal-Mart, they aim to keep an average user away from iPods and satellite radios.
Stations in the 85 markets will donate airtime for the Wal-Mart produced ads about the HD radios.
One reason people might jump at this is that you aren’t required to get a subscription like you have to with satellite radio operators XM Satellite and Sirius Satellite Radio.
What will be the most interesting thing to see is that whether this brings any changes in the policy of XM and Sirius. Moreover with an ability to offer up to three broadcast feeds on one HD Radio signal, it may be considered more of a competitor with the satellite stations then they are now.
