Vizio surfaces 8-inch Android tablet PC, VTAB1008

Leading American LCD and HDTV manufacturer, Vizio, enters the emerging tablet PC market with a superb 8-inch Android slate dubbed VTAB1008. The Vizio tablet PC is meant to maximize entertainment and the gaming experience of users with incredible picture and sound quality, the Irvine, California-based Vizio, said.

The Vizio VTAB1008 tablet PC packs in a 1 GHz processor with 512 MB of RAM and 2GB of built-in storage capacity. The external SD card slot can support a memory stick of up to 32GB The 8-inch display of the tablet is a 1024×768 capacitive touchscreen. The tablet PC also offers Bluetooth, 802.11n Wi-Fi, GPS, a mini USB port, micro HDMI-out, 3.5 mm headphone jack and a built-in IR radio.

The tablet will mount a VGA front-facing camera for video chatting, but there won’t be a rear camera. For better sound experience, the device will sport three stereo speakers with two on the top corners and one on the side. The device will work ten hours on battery per charge, the company boasted.

Nevertheless, it is not yet clear on which Android version it will actually play on. Some early testers of the device stated that the beta version of VTAB1008 was running on Android Gingerbread 2.3, but it looks like being an 8-inch tablet there is a better chance for the device to be updated to Google’s not-yet-announced Android 3.2 Honeycomb in the future.

As per reports, Google has planned a Honeycomb 3.2 version with special screen size and other features for 7-inch tablets. Added with Android OS, Vizio’s own UI will boost the potential of the tablet PC. The Vizio tablet is anticipated to hit the stores this summer itself. The company, however, has not yet revealed any details on its price.
