Vietnamese homemade wind-powered generator comes dirt cheap

Tran Quoc Hieu, a 24-year-old graduate from Vietnam has invented his new device - the wind-powered generator, which can generate about 60 kiloWatts of eletricity per month, that is just for lighting and television purposes of any household. He calls it a mini wind powered electricity generator and hopes to push it into the market by next year.

Hieu wanted to make people more aware about renewable and clean energy. He got the right ideaswhile attending a programme to train engineers at Ho Chi Minh City University of Polytechnics jointly by Vietnam and France. Hieu collected some very useful leads from different technical discussions there. Then, he came out with his own idea. It is dirt cheap - just VietnamDong 1 million ($48). While it awes people, who care about green technology, it also takes China, which sells its wind generators in Vietnam for as much as $450 each, by the collar.

However, it was neither easy nor quick for Hieu to develop his generator. He worked on the project for three years and finally came up with three reasons for people to buy his product. Indeed these are the three features which set Hieu's generator apart from the rest in the market. The propellers are made of wood, principle of aerodynamics go into the design and Hieu has used dynamos, usually found in motorbikes. This has been done with the intention to generate stronger electricity current and optimum electronic charging board to save energy when the battery is full.

Now, Hieu is worried about the marketing aspect of his product as renewable energy is not too popular in his country. Yet, he has hope, and because of a good reason too, as a fellow and informed citizen commented on an online post about Hieu’s generator, “It would be great if all families in Vietnam, from rural to urban areas, learn about renewable energy. The idea is great.”
