VIA EPIA powered robots unveiled at TIROS

Posted By: Alpheus Danson | Aug 22 2008

Robotics, for obvious reasons, has been at the cynosure of technological progress for quite some time now. At the crux of robotic development is the VIA EPIA Pico-ITX x86-type mainboard, which is quite popular for its compactness, power efficiency and most importantly, the opportunity it offers to build extremely robust and feature-rich robots. The Taipei International Robot Show (TIROS) will see three new robots rolling out from the PlayRobot stables. Each of them incorporates VIA’s cutting-edge boards and will address the educational, scientific and entertainment markets.

The Johnny 5 is a robot for hobbyists. It has a VIA EPIA PX10000G Pico-ITX board at its core and is fabricated with Servo Erector Set aluminum brackets and super-strong Lexan structural components. It is a performer and a fine example of the potency of VIA boards. The Vecna Battlefield Extraction-Assist Robot (BEAR), built for the army, is primarily a rescue robot. It can carry injured soldiers (lifting ability of 600lbs) and also navigate hostile terrain with ease. The heat dissipation abilities of the board come to the fore in this robot which is powered by a VIA EPIA Mini-ITX. For robot enthusiasts, it is the perfect treat! For a piece of the action, visit the World Trade Center in Taipei, Taiwan between 21-24 August.
