Vending machines with cigarettes and cold drinks are passé, so make way for the vending machine of the digital era — the digital content vending machine. Whichever way you put it, it is as weird as it sounds. Developed by South Korea’s ETRI, these “Content Islands” allow users to get content for their phones, computers or portable media players by plugging these devices into vending machines.
The machine does away with the registration process, and payments associated with mobile service providers, also, the user need not pay for the wireless packet charges. ETRI plans installations at airports, train and subway stations, and other such places when the machine reaches the market in about six months. Each machine is expected to cost $3,325.
