American P-38 fighter plane is revealed after 65 years of crash landing on beach in Wales. The P-38 had been submerged beneath water and sand, but recently erosion revealed the WWII relic.
US Air Force had forgotten the aircraft, but recent erosion of the Irish Sea beach revealed the twin engine relic. During the decades, beach strollers, sunbathers and swimmers were often within a few yards of the aircraft, utterly unaware of its existence under the sand. In this summer, the P-38 suddenly reappears due to unusual conditions, which caused the sand to shift and erode.
Lt. Elliot of Rich Square, stated that this is just a monumental discovery and it is very emotional thing. The pilot survived the belly flop, but three months later he was shot down in Tunisia and his body was never recovered.
The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, known as TIGHAR is an organization headed by Ric Gillespie and it is dedicatedly involved in preserving historic aircraft, finds romance as well as historic significance in the discovery.
The organization is planning to collaborate with British museum experts in recovering the nearly intact, but fragile aircraft by the end of next spring. The Imperial War Museum Duxford and the Royal Air Force Museum have shown their interest in recovering the aircraft.
