You must have seen all kinds of supercomputers around, but this latest one revealed by the Air Force Research Laboratory is one really special of them all. AFRL has shown a supercomputer constructed out of 1,760 PlayStation 3s, amazing, yeah right! According to Gamesutra, the supercomputer is called the Condor Cluster and it’s capable of 500 TFLOPS per second and is made up precisely out of 1,760 PS3s, 168 separate graphical processing units and 84 coordinating servers. The use of PS3s hasn’t made the supercomputer any more expensive, rather this system that costs $2 million is only 5-10% the cost of an equally powerful system. Further, the Condor Cluster consumes only 10% of the energy required by similar supercomputers. The system which will be used for processing satellite imagery besides being used in field of research will be unveiled at Wright-Paterson Air Force Base in Rome, NY.
