Ultra-thin Blu-ray disc spins up to 15,000 rpm, writes at 7x speed

Now, an optical disc that spins as fast as 15,000 RPM has been developed by researchers at Japan's NHK broadcasters. Currently, we have the optical disc systems that are clocked at around 10,000 rpm. If we make them spin faster than that, there is the possibility of the disc getting disintegrated into the player. You might loose all the data even if it's not broken.

But now, the new 0.1 mm thick optical disc based on Blu-ray technology is the solution to all these problems. The flexible disc, developed in partnership with Ricoh, is capable of writing at 7x speed. A thick stabilizing plate has been fixed into the drive to overcome the problem of its being not rigid enough to be used in a drive at any speed.

Anyhow, we won't be able to see this speedy disc anytime soon as it might undergo a series of tests before it hits the shelves.
